Rendering of the new Seneca High School building

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) broke ground on the new Seneca High School on Wednesday. The $100 million investment marks a major milestone in the district’s ongoing commitment to addressing costly, aging facilities.

“This is an exciting day for Seneca High School and the Academies of Louisville,” Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood said. “This new building will see generations of young learners, staff, and even superintendents. Throughout that time, it will be a reflection of our commitment, right now, to improving the value and impact of every dollar we spend at JCPS.”

Resources for this project are allocated from the Construction Fund, which is separate from the General Fund, and is in good condition. Often referred to as the “Capital Fund,” you can learn more about this distinction on the JCPS website

"From an operational standpoint, this new facility is a game-changer for Seneca,” Chief Operations Officer Dr. Rob Fulk said. “By implementing a Zero Energy Ready design and a geothermal HVAC system, we are not only reducing our environmental footprint but also ensuring significantly lower operational costs for decades to come. This project demonstrates our commitment to building sustainable, efficient, and resilient schools that provide the modern learning environments our students and staff deserve.”

This new facility supports Academy-focused learning through intentional design. The building will feature four distinct areas that reflect each of Seneca’s Academies: Agriscience & Leadership, Innovate, Freshman, and Health Science. This will include interior views showcasing work from different pathways, as well as a greenhouse and a barn for hands-on learning.

Once complete, the high school will reduce energy costs by about 40% through a new geothermal HVAC system. Additionally, the intentional use of daylight and shading, coupled with energy-efficient LED lighting with occupancy sensing, will help reduce utility costs.

Students will also enjoy a new multi-sport stadium with a turf field, fieldhouse, and improved athletic complex.

The new Seneca High School will be constructed on the same site as the existing school, with an anticipated completion ahead of the 2028-29 school year.
