Central High School’s forensic science students recently experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity— meeting some of the most renowned figures in forensic pathology, including the legendary “Coroner to the Stars,” Dr. Thomas Noguchi.

When Central teacher Keri Meador learned that the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) was holding its annual conference in Louisville, she reached out to see if her students might be able to attend a session or two.

“I never expected what came next,” Meador said.

The students were invited to explore the professional poster sessions with a guide, tour the exhibit hall, and meet members of NAME’s executive board. What began as a brief introduction became an hour-long conversation with leading forensic experts, who shared personal stories about their careers and the cases that shaped them.

Among the speakers was Dr. Jan M. Gorniak, known for performing the autopsy on Ariel Castro, who spoke passionately about representation in forensic pathology.

“Her words made a powerful impact on my students,” Meador said. “It was one of those moments I know they’ll carry for a lifetime.”

The evening culminated with a screening of Coroner to the Stars, a new documentary highlighting Noguchi’s extraordinary career. His investigations included some of the most famous cases in history, from Marilyn Monroe and Robert Kennedy to Natalie Wood, Sharon Tate, and John Belushi.

After the film, Noguchi stayed to meet Central students personally and pose for photos.

“Not only did my students meet him—they each received a personal photo with this legend in forensic history,” Meador said. “This was not something available to everyone—just another example of how warmly and generously the NAME members welcomed our group.”

As the only high school students in attendance, Central’s future forensic scientists were recognized before the audience at the close of the event. The pride and excitement on their faces captured what Meador called “one of those rare, beautiful teaching moments that fills your heart to the brim.”
