Lakeesa Burton

A current Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) assistant principal is stepping into a new leadership role within the district. Lakeesha Burton has been named the new principal of Kenwood Elementary School.

“Becoming the next principal of Kenwood Elementary is a true privilege,” Burton said. “I’m looking forward to partnering with this amazing school community and continuing the remarkable work already underway to ensure that every child thrives.”

Burton is a dynamic and experienced educator who brings a strong commitment to student success to her new role. She has served as the assistant principal at Chancey Elementary School for the past five years. Before that, she worked as an Academic Instructional Coach (AIC) and classroom teacher at Layne Elementary School.

“Ms. Burton is a strong communicator who values collaboration and transparency. She maintains an open-door policy and actively invites parents and families to be integral partners in their child’s educational journey,” said Dr. LaMesa Marks-Johns, assistant superintendent of JCPS Elementary Zone 1. “Her leadership is student-, staff-, and family-centered, and she is committed to building a school community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.”

Burton holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisville, a master’s degree in teaching from Spalding University, and a Rank 1 certification in Instructional Leadership and School Administration from the University of the Cumberlands.

"I am committed to building a positive and inclusive school culture where every student feels recognized, affirmed, and motivated to succeed. At Kenwood Elementary, I’m excited to promote meaningful connections and support academic achievement for all students, every single day."

Burton will officially begin her new position at Kenwood on July 1.
