🪶 Honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day 🪶 We know this post comes a little late, but we couldn’t let the day pass without acknowledging that we reside on the ancestral lands of the Cherokee, Shawnee, Chickasaw, and Osage peoples, among others, here in what is now known as Louisville, Kentucky. At Hawthorne, we honor the enduring history, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples—past, present, and future. Today and every day, we recognize the importance of learning from Indigenous communities and respecting their deep connection to this land. Let’s take a moment to reflect with gratitude on those who cared for this land long before us and whose legacy continues to shape our community.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the lives of deceased loved ones. It's not a religious observance but a cultural tradition to remember and honor those who have passed away. During this time, families create ofrendas, or altars, to pay tribute to their ancestors. At Hawthorne Elementary, we're embracing this beautiful tradition as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. Our ofrenda is a way to honor the rich cultural heritage of Hispanic communities and emphasize the importance of family and remembrance. We invite families to contribute photos from October 6-October 24 of their departed loved ones to be displayed on the ofrenda. Please write your student’s name and teacher on the back of the photo. This ofrenda serves as a visual representation of the enduring connections we have with our ancestors and the vibrant tapestry of Hispanic cultures. It's a non-religious, inclusive way to celebrate the essence of Día de los Muertos and National Hispanic Heritage Month, fostering understanding and unity among our school community. The ofrenda will be on display from October 6 through November 7.
