Headshot of Dr. Irina McGrath

Former Newcomer Academy Assistant Principal Dr. Irina McGrath has stepped into the school’s top leadership position following the retirement of longtime Newcomer principal Gwen Snow.

With more than 20 years of education experience—including six as Newcomer’s AP—McGrath brings both instructional leadership and deep understanding of the school’s unique core mission to serve multilingual learners who are new to the United States.

“I am honored to lead a school community that means so much to me,” McGrath said. “Our students bring languages, cultures and experiences that enrich Newcomer Academy every day. I look forward to working alongside our dedicated staff, families and community partners to build on our school’s strengths and expand opportunities for every student.”

McGrath began her career as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher and literacy lead in JCPS. She also worked as an ESL middle school instructional coach at JCPS and education recovery specialist with the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) before becoming Newcomer’s assistant principal in 2020.

Kim Morales, regional assistant superintendent of high schools, touted McGrath’s extensive experience and ties to the Newcomer community.

“Dr. McGrath has a profound understanding of the Newcomer Academy community, the unique strengths and needs of our students, and our mission to equip multilingual learners with the academic and language tools required to thrive,” Morales said.

McGrath holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction, an Education Specialist degree in Educational Administration and a Master of Arts in Reading Education, all from the University of Louisville. She also holds a Master of Arts in English as a Second Language and French from Kuban State University in Russia.

McGrath, who said she came to the United States from Russia and learned English as a second language, understands “firsthand how closely language learning, belonging and academic opportunity are connected.”

“This perspective has shaped my career as an educator and leader for more than 20 years,” McGrath wrote in her application materials. “It also strengthens my commitment to ensuring that every student at Newcomer Academy not only feels respected and valued but also has the support, opportunities and encouragement needed to pursue their goals and achieve their dreams.”
