PREPARED FOR SCHOOL
The First 30 Minutes of the Day
It’s Hard to Catch Up
The first full 30 minutes of a student’s day at school is important because:
Routine sets the pace- It allows students to settle into the same routine as their peers, not leaving them feeling lost or left out when they arrive late. Have you ever gone to a movie 10 minutes after it started? How did you feel? Being tardy to school is the same as being tardy to a movie--It is hard to catch up!
Learning is taking place- Students engage in key learning such as shared reading, reading aloud, vocabulary building and writing. Have you ever been on a sports team, arrived after the coach has scheduled the lineup, assigned practice drills, set expectations, shared the game plan, and the game had started? How did you feel? Being tardy to school is the same as being tardy to a sports event--It is hard to catch up!
Healthy Start – Students receive a free nutritious breakfast that feeds the brain and also creates opportunities for them to build social skills such as one-on-one interaction with their peers, engaging in decision-making, problem-solving and more. A nourished brain is open for learning. A nutritious meal does wonders for the start of the day. It is hard for brain activity to catch up!
