LOUISVILLE, KY – Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) announced a transition in its Early Childhood locations, moving toward a long-standing goal of a center-based model beginning in the 2026-27 school year.
The move is designed to strengthen specialized programming and provide high-quality learning environments while freeing up essential space for K–5 students within elementary buildings.
As part of this transition, JCPS will close 10 Early Childhood sites at the end of the current school year. The affected locations include:
Blake Elementary
Cochrane Elementary
Farmer Elementary
Gheens Early Childhood
Hawthorne Elementary
Jacob Elementary
Stonestreet Elementary
Thomas Jefferson Early Childhood
Tully Elementary
Wilt Elementary
While these closures eliminate 30 specific classrooms, the District will continue to operate 18 robust early childhood sites. This includes the opening of a brand-new, state-of-the-art Early Childhood Center in Buechel.
There is ample classroom space across the remaining and new facilities to accommodate all current students. Families can expect detailed information regarding enrollment and specific placements for the next school year by early June.
Updates for Classified Staff
The transition also brings changes for Early Childhood Classified Employees currently serving at the affected locations. These employees will be identified as "overstaffed," granting them the opportunity to transfer to existing Early Childhood locations or the new Buechel center.
Staff members with questions regarding their status or the transfer process are encouraged to contact their school’s HR personnel specialist for guidance.
Looking Ahead
JCPS remains committed to maintaining the high-quality learning experiences families expect while evolving the program to better meet the community's needs.
