21st Century Technology Standards

Computer Education Support (CES) staff coordinates several large student-centered initiatives based on national and state technology standards. These initiatives include:

21st Century Skills Assessment for elementary & middle schools

CES coordinates the technology assessment to all 5th and 8th grade students. The district uses Learning.com's 21st Century Skills Assessment which provides psychometrically valid data on how well elementary and middle school students grasp critical technology skills for the 21st century.

The 21st Century Skills Assessment uses a blend of interactive, performance-based questions that allow students to authentically perform complex tasks in simulated applications, and multiple choice knowledge-based questions. This assessment is fully aligned to the ISTE NETS-S 2007 refreshed standards and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills Student Outcomes.

Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3) for high schools

CES implements and coordinates technology professional development for teachers who are teaching, assessing, and administering IC3 to high school students.  The IC3 program is the world’s first standards-based training and certification program for basic computing and Internet knowledge and skills.

  • IC3 is imbedded in the district’s computer applications class.
  • Successful completion of the IC3 program ensures that students have the knowledge and skills required for basic use of
    • computer hardware and software,
    • key technology applications, and
    • the Internet.

JCPS's goal is to have students earn the IC3 certification which gives them an advantage for employment in a typical office setting.
