Visual Arts Application Requirements
NEW APPLICATION MATERIAL REQUIRED BY THE ADMISSIONS COMMITTEEAll Manual application materials are due at dupont Manual by January 13, 2012 unless otherwise noted.
- Please make a copy of submitted materials, since they will not be returned.
- Enrollment is limited.
- Submission of an application does not guarantee placement in a program or school.
- Please use our checklist to ensure your application is complete before mailing or delivery to Manual High School.
- JCPS application material (must be completed before Manual can process your application)
- A completed application form* designating the desired magnet program (mailed or delivered to the JCPS office of Optional, Magnet, and Advance Programs on Newburg Rd. by January 6, 2012).
- Manual application material (application packet must be complete. No incomplete packets will be accepted.)
- Attendance at a 90 minute drawing session at Manual Visual Art Magnet where a group of applicants will each produce an original drawing that will be evaluated and retained by Manual. Choose and register for one of the following Drawing Session dates and fill out the required information to reserve your appointment date. All drawing sessions begin promptly at 3:00pm and 6:00pm on the 3rd floor Art Annex.
Please arrive early and bring your portfolio of art with you.
The three Drawing Session dates are:- Thursday, Dec 1, 3:00pm
- Thursday, Feb 2, 3:00pm
- Thursday, Feb 2, 6:00pm
Beginning November 1, 2011, each of the three dates will be available for registration. Please register for a drawing session as early as possible. The dates will be open for registration until they are full. Choose only one date. Drawing session size is limited. If a drawing session is full, please choose another date. First come, first served.
A confirmation page will show on your computer screen directly after you register. This confirmation page is your proof of registration. Please check to see that all information is correct on this confirmation of registration.
- When you attend the Drawing Session that you registered for above, bring your portfolio of artwork consisting of a maximum of ten pieces of art (50% of which must be from direct observation rather than copied from photographs or other sources). Artwork may include photography, drawings, paintings, and/or sculpture. Figure and still life work is acceptable. Do not include cartoons, anime, or manga. The portfolio of artwork will be reviewed and evaluated during the drawing session at Manual and returned to applicant upon leaving the session.
- A writing portfolio quality essay, composed and written by the applicant, in response to the following question (delivered to Manual by January 13, 2012).
- Many visual artists can recall the exact moment when they knew they would pursue an artistic career. Tell us about your specific moment or experience that inspired you to apply to the Manual Visual Arts magnet and how that moment or experience directs you towards your future goals.
- A completed activities and interest survey* form which describes the applicant's activities, volunteer work, awards, and recognitions--especially those that relate to the desired magnet program (delivered to Manual by January 13, 2012) .
- Two completed recommendation forms* , one from your art teacher (current art teacher if applicable) and one from another teacher who is familiar with applicant 's work, abilities, and commitment (delivered to Manual by January 13, 2012) .
- A copy of the applicant's school transcript which should include middle school attendance data, achievement test scores (CAT-5, CTBS, Stanford), advance program test scores, CATS scores, past grades, and current progress report (delivered to Manual by January 13, 2012) .

- Two Art Exercises completed by the applicant: (print, complete each of the art exercises, deliver to Manual by January 13, 2012) Instructions are included on each exercise.
