The 2011 Eastern High School Cross Country team had a banner season. For the 1st time in school history the team won the Jefferson County Public Schools Championship, the Regional Championship, and finished on the podium at the State Championship, placing 3rd. The men’s team was led by 4 all-state performers including seniors Kyle Covert and Austin Zachary who were first team all-state selections and juniors Charles Statler and Alex Ozier who were all state honorable mention selections. Kyle Covert also finished 3rd
The women were led by sophomore Charliann Garcia and junior Tori Wigginton to a fourth place finish in the state’s toughest region. The ladies also finished 2nd at the JCPS championship meet.
The cross country team is unique at Eastern in its regard for participation and involvement. The team has adopted a non-cut policy that welcomes athletes with no regard for previous participation or ability. The only requirement for participation is interest in getting better and a commitment to daily participation. Athletes of all ability and experience levels are welcome, but only athletes with high levels of commitment.
The team also hosts one of the top meets in Kentucky. The Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic is a college, high school, and middle school meet that is co-sponsored with the Greater Louisville Sports Commission. The meet is held at the storied Cross Country course at Tom Sawyer Park on September 29th, 2012.
