Eastern High School PTSA

WHAT CAN I EXPECT??....

As a parent, these are a few of the events you and
your student may be participating in this year at Eastern….

EVERYONE - Every Year

  • Check graduation requirements.
  • Check KEES scholarship requirements – This program provides scholarship money for instate tuition based on grade point average and ACT or SAT scores.
  • Advanced placement courses are available every year; Bellarmine ACCESS credit may also be available; advanced placement testing is in May.
  • Look for clubs and activities to be involved in. Try something new! Check the Eastern website for a list
  • Each class conducts fundraisers for class treasury to fund Senior activities.
  • Volunteer for PTSA-Make phone calls, staple newsletters, bring in refreshments.

  • Sept.-Sign up to receive weekly informational emails at http://www.easternhs.org/parents/default.htm.
  • Sept.- Athletic Cards - Discount admission to all regular season home games. Contact Mr. Howard for more information.
  • Sept. - Homecoming Reps-Each class votes for representatives from its class, to be crowned during Spirit Week.
  • Sept. - Powderpuff football - Girls annual class competition. Contact the class sponsor or officer.
  • Sept. - Spirit Week - Week preceding Homecoming-Fun filled Week of school spirit, class - motivated acitivities.
  • Sept. - Homecoming.
  • Oct. - Conference Day.
  • Oct. - College and Career Expo.
  • Oct. - PTA Reflections-Writing, art, music, photography and dance contest. Local, State and National levels for all but Dance. Mid-October deadline.
  • Oct .- PSAT. See additional information under Sophomore and Junior classes.
  • Oct .- Advance Program testing - Test date to be announced. Any students grades 9-12 who wishes to qualify for Advance Program must make a passing score on this test. Applications are available in Student Services.
  • Nov. - Holiday Caravan - School wide charity drive to collect non-perishable food donations; collections begin after Thanksgiving.
  • Dec. - Holiday Caravan continues.
  • Dec. - Madrigal performances - All EHS choir studetns will be selling tickets for performances.
  • Jan. - School resumes.
  • Jan. - Baseketball Homecoming - date to be determined.
  • Feb. - Academinc Awared Ceremony - Student recognition. Parents are invited.
  • Feb. - Finacial Aide workshop for college bound students.
  • Feb. - Conference Day.
  • Mar. - Vaudeville - Music and comedy acts provided by student body.
  • April - Spring Break.
  • April - CATS Testing - Late spring.
  • April - Junior Ring Ceremony and Dance (Prom) - Late Spring.
  • May - Advanced Placement test.
  • May - Arts Day - May Showcase of Fine Arts for students and parents.
  • May - Senior Prom.
  • May - Project Graduation the night of graduation (see Events by Class, Juniors and Seniors for more information).

FRESHMEN

  • KEES Earnings begin Freshman year. Keep your grades up. This program provides scholarship money for in-state tuition, based on grade point average and ACT scores.
  • Class officers - to be elected in late September.
  • Look for clubs and activities to be involved in. Try something new! Check our website for a list.
  • Bake sales to start the Class Treasury that leads up to Senior Activities.

SOPHOMORES

  • Beta Club induction - Qualified students (GPA 3.2 or higher) invited to join Beta Club are inducted in a spring ceremony.
  • Beta Club members participate in a variety of service projects; their largest project is recycling.
  • Miss EHS pageant - Eastern students compete for title and prizes. November contest.National Honor Society induction -- Qualified students (GPA 3.5 or higher) invited to join National Honor Society are inducted in a fall candlelight ceremony.
  • Parents are invited to the induction ceremony.
  • NHS's most significant service project at Eastern is the Holiday Care-A-Van which collects food and money for Eastern Area Community Ministries.
  • Practice PSAT - Register with Ms. Noble in Student Services beginning

JUNIORS

  • Ring ceremony and Academic awards day — late spring - Presentation of class rings and Academic Honors. Parents are invited. Parents host luncheon for Senior Class-Senior Week activities include luncheon hosted by the junior class for the Seniors during the last week of school at an off-campus location. Watch the newsletter and weekly e-mails for volunteer information.
  • National Honor Society induction-See above explanation in Sophomore Class.
  • Project Graduation -Junior parents assist Senior parents with this all night lock-in for seniors following graduation at an off campus location. Many parents are needed to help. Watch the newsletter and weekly e-mails for volunteer information.
  • ACT and SAT testing-Check counselor’s office for test deadlines and practice booklets. Juniors should take this at least once during the Junior year (http://www.collegeboard.com and http://www.act.com.
  • PSAT - National Merit Scholars are chosen from this test. Given at school in October. Register and pay $15 fee beginning in October.
  • Governor’s Scholar Program (GSP) and Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA) application due dates:
  • GSP http://www.kygsp.org/ applications available in November for program dates of Mid-June to late July based on program location.
  • GSA application deadline December 2008 for program June – July 2009.
  • Class ring orders-Representatives will be at school several times throughout the year to take orders.
  • Start narrowing college choices. Keep working on GPA, test prep, and extracurricular activities to enhance resume.
  • Visit the College & Career Expo at the Ky Fair & Expo Center in October.
  • Remember to schedule college campus visits on scheduled JCPS days off or obtain pre-arranged Educational Enhancement Day request form.
  • Financial Aid workshop in February for financial assistance.
  • Have Senior pictures taken over summer!

SENIORS

  • Have Senior pictures ready for September deadline, yearbook bio information due to yearbook staff early September.
  • Senior Superlatives vote in early September.
  • Remember to schedule college campus visits on scheduled JCPS days off or obtain pre-arranged Educational Enhancement Day request form.
  • Visit the College & Career Expo at the Ky Fair & Expo Center in October.
  • Graduation announcements and caps & gowns-Representative will be at school in late October; orders will be taken in November.
  • Financial Aid workshop in February for College Assistance.
  • Vaudeville in the spring. One male and female Senior serve as Master of Ceremonies.

  • Senior Prom.
  • Senior week activities-Traditionally include luncheon, picnic, Belle of Louisville, Award ceremony.
  • Traditionally each sport has a Senior Night at its last home game of the season.
