Eagles beat rival Ballard... TWICE

by Alex Shull

Last season the Eastern boy’s soccer team had a winning record of 8-5-1. They beat rivals Ballard High School (3-2) and Christian Academy of Louisville (4-0). They also had other big wins against Fern Creek, Seneca, Butler and Shelby County High Schools, and tied Kentucky Country Day (3-3).

Leading the boys this year are seniors Nick Jordan, Adam Stringer (captain), Nik Hoar (captain), Cory Schauff, Anthony Larosa and Billy Moore. These seniors have really stepped up to lead, and their record proves it.

The Coaches this year are the returning Mr. Hawes, Mr. Gillum, and Mr. Robb.

Kicking off the season was a 1-0 loss against Bardstown Bethlehem.

The Eagles went on to play Jeffersontown and won 11-0. In fact the game did not even last the full time. The referees stopped the game when they mercy rolled Jeffersontown in the first half. A mercy roll is when the opposing team scores ten or more goals before the game is over. When this happens, the game is called.

The third game of the season was a win against Kentucky Country Day (4-1). Although KCD was a rough team, Eastern pulled through.

The fourth game was against Ballard. The boys ran through them, winning 2-0, and made Ballard take the walk of shame at their own field.

In the previous season Eastern beat Ballard 3-2. So the Eagles had victory two years in a row.

Stringer scored one goal in the first half. Adam Emig, a junior, scored the other goal in the second half.

Eastern played Male and had an unfortunate loss (2-0). It was a very aggressive game. Both teams got yellow cards (meaning the player got a warning for a foul). Eastern held Male until the second half, where they then scored.

When the Eagles played St. Xavier, the Tigers were ranked number one in the state. Eastern was not ranked at all. So when the Eagles only lost 4-2, they did not take it hard. Because everyone expected a blow-out, this game was a real eye opener for their future in Districts.

In Eastern’s District this year is Ballard, KCD, and CAL.

In the Eagles’ first game of Districts, they played Ballard where they beat the Bruins for the second time this season. Eastern then defeated CAL to become District champs.

The season ended for the boys when they lost to South Oldham in the first round of the Regional tournament.

CATS Results Rewards Juniors and Seniors

More than half of the senior class will not suffer endless multiple choice and essay questions at the end of both semesters because of their stellar performance on last year’s CATS test.

To be exempt from finals, seniors must have no novice scores and no more that two apprentices on Math, Science, Social Studies and Arts. Sixty-four percent of the class of 2008 met these standards.

This year’s juniors also performed well on the test, and as a result, eighty percent will not have to take an English final either semester. To achieve this goal, students should have a proficient or distinguished on the Reading portion of their CATS test.

The whole school performance was astounding. Between the last two years, Eastern’s overall score rose 4.5 points, moving from an accountabilty index of 83.8 to 88.3.

The highest individual academic category rise was in reading. Two years ago, Eastern’s score was 83.4162. Last year, students scored 100.8635, giving Eastern an increase of 17.4473.

The next highest increase was the 13.5451 increase in Practical Living and Vocational Studies.

Teachers have already been told not to take it easy on those students who are not exempt, even if they are in a class of mostly exempt students. All finals are expected to be rigorous and comprehensive. Non-exempt students will not be rewarded with an easy final, or no final at all.
