Greetings and Welcome Back!
We may have had a late start to school, but the seniors have been busy since the first day. Here's a few highlights of what is happening at Butler.
Butler has undertaken an initiative we are calling "Advisement Period". This replaces what you would refer to as homeroom. Butler faculty and staff will be meeting with their advisement group periodically throughout the school year to discuss specific topics. Our hope is to provide one more person that a student feels comfortable talking with and going to if a concern were to arise.
This leads me into yesterday's topic. Butler conducted the state mandated Suicide Prevention Program via advisement periods yesterday. A survey was administered, information was given, a video was shown and a discussion was held within each advisement group. Please take a few minutes to discuss this program with your child.
Our first senior class meeting was held this past Monday. Principal Allen reviewed school expectations and challenged the seniors to be leaders in the school. He also discussed changes in the code of discipline and dress code. Seniors who choose not to follow school/class rules will be referred to Mr. Allen for disciplinary action. I took this opportunity to discuss senior courses and graduation requirements with the students. I also gave them some important dates to remember.
One date to mark on your calendar is Thursday, September 22. This is when Butler's Senior Orientation Night will held in the large gym at 7 pm. All seniors are required to attend. Parents are highly encouraged to attend. At this meeting we will discuss senior activities, graduation requirements, the college application process and scholarship/college information will be distributed. A college fair will also be held this evening. College representatives rarely go to a single high school college fair. However, college reps realize that Butler students and parents are extremely involved and participate in these special events. Please take advantage of having the college reps on our home court. You will not want to miss out on this opportunity!
Next Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday I will be conducting tours of the guidance center via Senior English classes. During these tours I will familiarize the students with all the resources we have available in the guidance center, the procedures utilized to submit applications and where scholarship information can be located. If you are free next week, you are more than welcome to stop by the guidance center and join one of the tours. (The lesson and tour will last about 40 minutes.)
Attached is information that will be sent to you about senior baby ads for the yearbook. Any question about the baby ads should be directed to the yearbook advisor, Ms. Gail Jones.
Speaking of yearbook, we want every senior to have their senior picture in the 2011-2012 issue of The Den. Drape/tux pictures for the yearbook are taken free of charge by CS Photography. Most seniors were able to get their picture taken during the summer or registration. However, there will be a make up session after school on Wednesday, September 14.
Orders were taken for the 2012 senior sweatshirts at registration. If your student has not ordered one, he/she can see the senior sponsor, Ms. Kneisler, in the main office between 7 - 7:20 am. The cost for the senior sweatshirt is $25. Not only can seniors wear the sweatshirts to school, but they are worn for the senior panoramic picture to be taken later this fall.
