Young Elementary School
School Profile
Young Elementary has been authorized as an Young Elementary is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School by the IB Organization, a non-profit international education foundation, in Geneva, Switzerland. A districtwide magnet school, Young is the only elementary school in Kentucky that earned the authorization in December 2010. It is but one of 1,300 other schools in 110 countries to offer an IB program.
In addition to a curriculum focused on such core subjects as reading, writing, and math, Young has fully implemented the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) for students age 3 - 11. It is designed to prepare twenty-first century students for an interconnected world in which knowledge is constantly developing. The program concentrates on six themes of global significance that create a "transdisciplinary" framework called the Programme of Inquiry.
- Who we are
- Where we are in place and time
- How we express ourselves
- How the world works
- How we organize ourselves
- How we share the planet
Young's teachers have specialized training and work collaboratively to develop a program with cohesive interdisciplinary units that are rigorous, relevant, and engaging. They enable students to become critical thinkers and effective communicators who are well prepared for college-prep classes in middle and high school. Currently, Highland Middle is an IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) Candidate School and Atherton H.S. has the IB Diploma Programme (DP).
