Young Rembrandts
Dann C. Byck Elementary School emphasizes the inclusion of “The Arts” across the curriculum at all grade levels. To provide avenues for our students to create original art as an extension of the classroom, Byck Elementary provides students with an opportunity to interact with an artist, on a weekly basis, to explore and create individual works utilizing a variety of media. Three sessions (fall, winter, and spring) are held during the school year to accommodate all interested students as an extension of the Byck Artist-in-Residence Program. There is a moderate fee assessed for each session.
Quick Recall
Quick Recall is an academic team where students work to answer factual questions during timed conditions. All Byck third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students are considered for recommendation by teachers to compete in weekly organized academic competitions for elementary students in the Metro area. Critical thinking skills are enhanced as participants compete in areas such as math, science, social studies, language arts and humanities. This weekly activity culminates in The Mayors Cup Competition where individual and team awards and trophies are given to winning teams and their members.
Creative Problem Solving
The Dann C. Byck Elementary School Problem Solving Team will be composed of teacher recommended third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students. Team members will meet on a weekly basis to work on enhancing critical and creative problem solving skills in order to solve a current or future world/community problem in an organized way. This competitive activity will culminate in students presenting their findings either in a drama presentation or in a written format. Students are recognized and rewarded for their efforts at the Byck Academic and Sports Award Banquet.
Basketball
All Dann C. Byck fourth-, and fifth-grade students are invited to tryout for the Byck Cougar Basketball Team (exceptional third-grade students may also be included). League play is conducted every Friday evening, during basketball season, in the Dr. James M. Bond Gymnasium located on the Byck Elementary School campus. Elementary schools from across the District participate in competitive league play which culminates in a tournament and awards ceremony as part of the Dann C. Byck Academic and Sports Awards Banquet. A $20 fee is assessed for participation in this activity.
Cheerleading
Tryouts for the fourth and fifth grade girls and boys Cheerleading Team will be held in late September. This “Cougar School Spirit Squad” enthusiastically cheers for the Dann C. Byck boy and girl basketball team in league play with other elementary schools in our District. In addition, a city-wide Cheerleading Competition is annually held in the spring to showcase the weekly spirited work of each squad. This extra-curricular activity is sponsored by Ms. Tanette Weathers, a Byck fourth-grade teacher, and former student cheerleader Ms. Heather Vincent. There is a $20.00 fee for participation in this group which meets on a weekly basis after school hours.
Tap Into Fitness
This program, sponsored by Dr. Louis Heuser, The Heuser Clinic, and The Louisville Water Company, provides activities that teach good nutrition and fitness and how consumerism impacts your health. These activities increase student awareness of the impact of nutritional choices and physical fitness in their everyday life. Students will learn:
- How “real” serving size compares to what you actually eat
- To measure sugar content of popular snacks
- How advertising works and how to read between-the-lines
- From community guests why fitness and nutrition matters in the “real world”
- In PE classes how to build muscle and endurance
- To sample healthy foods during taste tests after lunch
In addition, special events will be held to give parents ideas for exercise and suggestions on the selections of healthy snack foods. Throughout the year fifth-grade students will learn the scientific principals of fitness and nutrition from Dr. Hueser as well as tracking their progress.
