Curriculum and Professional Development

In both science and mathematics, the grant is supporting curriculum systems based on World Class Standards. Science curriculum was implemented in elementary and middle schools in the 2006-07 school year with science modules. Mathematics will begin implementation at the sixth and seventh grades in the 2007-08 school year using Connected Mathematics 2 along with a system of interventions and assessments that support it.

The professional development that supports both systems follows a model that provides implementation support in the first year, followed by extensions that help teachers encourage their students to develop deeper understandings, ask important questions, and take responsibility for their own learning as they study. The grant is also planning to provide support for developing professional learning communities in which colleagues will support each other as they attempt to improve their own practice.
