Special Announcement: Earth Day Perspectives

Earth Day Perspectives 2010: Gardens and Locally-Grown Food

The Kentucky School Garden Network is collaborating with Jefferson County Public Schools’ Global Connections staff to present the 3rd Annual Earth Day Perspectives essay project. Each year, in honor of Earth Day, members of the Kentuckiana community and beyond write essays on a range of environmental issues and submit them for publication in the Earth Day Perspectives issue of Global Connections. For Earth Day Perspectives 2010, contributors are asked to submit an essay that responds to the following question, “How do gardens and locally-grown food contribute to the well-being of our communities?” Writers may address any key area(s). Topics can include but are not limited to:

- gardens and the health of children
- The reduction of the “nutrition gap” between economic groups
- gardens and environmental stewardship
- The importance of local food
- The joy of gardening
- Does gardening change our view of the land?
- The relationship between urban and rural communities
- What we can learn through gardens
- Using gardening to teach
- The generation gap of gardening

To participate in Earth Day Perspectives 2010, please submit your essay, 500 words or less, along with a digital photograph of yourself by March 15, 2010 to:
