Dear Readers,

Welcome to Earth Day Perspectives. This publication is a joint effort of the JCPS Department of Diversity, Equity and Poverty Issues and the JCPS Center for Environmental Education in support of the Partnership for a Green City. Many have expressed curiosity about the common threads that bring these departments together in a project such as this and our monthly newsletter Global Connections.

It is important to recognize that concern about the environment cannot exist in a vacuum. To find lasting and sustainable solutions we have to understand the behaviors that have created the problems.  As we explore this deeper layer, we venture into the role of culture in shaping attitudes about the environment; and, it may seem obvious, but culture influences how we view and treat the environment. Global Connections and Earth Day Perspectives are the intersection of thinking about culture/diversity and the environment.

Last year this project was initiated as a way to share and understand the views of community leaders, environmental educators, and concerned citizens as Earth Day approaches on April 22.  The need for understanding diverse points of view as we set about to address environmental issues facing our society is greater as each year passes. The contributors to this document share a diversity of thought and press us to think outside of our cultural comfort zone as our own behavior relates to our part in environmental problems and solutions.

These perspectives challenge us all to embrace debate and ideas that not only support our attitudes, but prompt us to think in different ways. We wish you a hopeful and thoughtful Earth Day.

Sincerely,

Donna Griffin

Aloud PD Workshop for Educators - May 14

Creating Activism, Creating Voice: Urban Debate & Youth Development

Interest a child in reading and she will move mountains to overcome educational obstacles regardless of socio-economic circumstance. This simple but compelling idea is achievable for millions of students through the Associated Leaders of Urban Debate (ALOUD). Incorporating debate into curriculum, communities and programs is changing the landscape of education.

ALOUD invites you to participate in a workshop session on May 14 2009 a 3:30-6:30 p.m at Gheens Academy in Room 205-206.

Teachers and administrators will discover debate’s allure for young people and how debate creates exciting opportunities for self-directed learning and interactive training that is transforming education for thousands of young people nationwide. ALOUD representatives will demonstrate the debate process, explore synergies with other methods of self-discovery and highlight the role of colleges, parents and volunteers.

This program is made possible through a partnership between the Associated Leaders of Urban Debate (ALOUD) and the English-Speaking Union (ESU). Visit our Web site: www.debateleaders.org and www.esuky.org/
