Gheens Academy

Welcome

There are currently over eight thousand students in Jefferson County Public Schools who speak English as a second language. They come from dozens of different cultural backgrounds and nearly every continent. Culture and country of origin can profoundly influence a child's identity, life experiences, and learning, which is why it is so important for educators to become familiar with these various global cultures. The JCPS Diversity/Multicultural Education Office has developed the "Globally Speaking" Web site as part of an on-going process of informing educators about the various nations and global languages that are represented within the district.

Below is a menu for each continent. The languages are grouped according to the continents on which they are commonly spoken. When you select a language you will be directed to a "profile page" about the language and the cultures and nations in which it is spoken. "Global Speaking" is an continuous project where educators can contribute information and material to every nation's profile page, whether it be photos, lesson activities, personal travel essays, and other resources.

PLEASE NOTE: This Web site is new and is currently under development. In our efforts to make the profile pages as useful and informative as possible, we welcome contributions from JCPS educators. If you would like to contribute material - including photos, lesson activities, personal travel essays, and other resources - please send all submissions to catherine.collesano@jefferson.kyschools.us. We also welcome your suggestions. How can we make this Web site more useful and relevant for educators? Send your comments to catherine.collesano@jefferson.kyschools.us.
