Elementary School Wellness Policies
In order to meet the requirements under SB 172, School-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Councils at all elementary schools (K-5) have established a wellness policy. These policies ensure that students will engage in (at most) 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day. Physical activity can be considered part of the instructional day. The Council must also adopt an assessment tool to determine each child’s level of physical activity on an annual basis. In addition, to the physical activity focus, the policy must also address nutritional choices and healthy habits.
Though each school may have varied activities and strategies established for fulfilling its requirements of SB 172, they all must meet the criteria established under the law. A wellness policy adopted by the SBDM Council must comply with federal law, state law and board policy.
