Employment Information
Jefferson County Public Schools accept applications for entry-level classified positions on a daily basis. All applications must be received in Human Resources by the deadline date (please note deadlines vary). Each applicant will be given careful consideration but not all applicants will be interviewed. Interviews will be scheduled only for those applicants determined to best meet all qualifications established as required and desirable in order to successfully hold the position. The work record, attendance patterns, performance evaluations, deportment, depth and recency of experience, training and skills will be among the factors given careful consideration. References will be contacted by the Human Resources Department.
What do I need to apply for a Classified position with JCPS?
- In order to complete the JCPS On-line Employment Application you will need the following information:
- Your Social Security Number
- 4 Employer/ Professional References (complete supervisors names, addresses, and phone numbers)
- Work History (complete supervisor names, addresses and dates of employment)
Computer terminals are available in the Application Center at the VanHoose Education Center (3332 Newburg Road), Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. You can use any computer with an Internet connection (libraries, government employment centers, etc). Criminal Background Check
This is required of all applicants seeking employment with the Jefferson County Public Schools.
- Classified applicants must complete a state background check.
- The cost is $10.00please bring exact payment. (Fee is subject to change without notice.)
- Background checks are processed in the Application Center at the VanHoose Education Center, 3332 Newburg Road, Louisville, KY 40218, Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- You must sign in at the Application Center prior to being fingerprinted.

What do I need to know to apply for instructional or clerical positions?
KY Paraeducator Test
This assessment is administered to applicants applying for Instructional Assistants, Bus Monitors (Early Childhood) or Instructor I positions. A battery of tests given on the computer covers reading, writing, mathematics, and instructional strategies. The test is approximately 1 and 1/2 hours and is scheduled through the Application Center. The KPA examination can only be taken a maximum of three times. There is a study guide (2009 2nd Edition) available online or you may contact the Adult Education Department at (502) 485-7101 for a free assessment/study session if you need assistance in test taking skills. Please note, you are exempt from the taking the KPA if you have a minimum of 48 college semester hours, or above, from an accredited college or university.
Clerical Skills Test
This test is administered to applicants applying for positions of Clerical, Secretarial, Bookkeeper, and Lunchroom/Office Assistant. The test lasts approximately 1 and 1/2 hours. A battery of tests, given on a computer covers typing, filing, mathematics, customer service, checking, and vocabulary. Test scores are valid for three years to the last date the test was taken. There is a maximum limit of three times to pass the clerical skills test. You can further your typing skills by logging on to www.powertyping.com.
What do I need to do to apply for a Bus Driver for JCPS?
Submit the following information to CB Young Service Center, 3001 Crittenden Drive, Louisville KY , 40209, (502) 485-3800:
- Complete an on-line application;
- Education verification (*GED certificate, high school diploma, college transcripts);
*NOTE: Applicants that sign a GED agreement and meet the passing score may be considered for employment. - Criminal records check - $10.00 cash fee;
- Employment eligibility verification:
- Driver’s license and social security card or birth certificate government issue) or passport;
- I-9 form other legal documents may be required (work visa, etc.);
- Military experience verification: DD 214, if applicable;
- References: must provide names and complete addresses of 4 work references. Relatives may not be used as references.
How do I apply for classified employment consideration?
- Applicants other than bus drivers, please complete an online application.
- After you have completed the on-line application, bring the following information to our office at the VanHoose Education Center:
- EXACT cash, money order, or personal check to pay for criminal records check. The fee for criminal records check is $10.00 for classified positions (fee is subject to change).
- You will be charged a $25.00 fee for a returned check.
- Driver’s License
- Social security card or official birth certificate
- High school diploma, official GED transcript or official college transcript(s) from an accredited university or college
- Voided personal check in order to set up direct deposit for payroll
- Some positions may require testing, training, or a physical examination, which must be scheduled by JCPS personnel.
How is my salary determined?
Positions such as clerical and instructional assistants are paid off of salary schedule IA. The maximum entry step for a newly hired, full-time employee is Step 3 with verified job-related related work experience, education beyond what is required, or active military duty DD-214.
Nutrition Services, Housekeeping, Transportation, In-School Security, Maintenance: Placed on salary schedule IB. The maximum entry step for a newly hired full-time employee is Step 3 with verified job-related work experience, education beyond what is required, or active military duty DD-214.
They hourly rate for support staff substitute positions is $8.73 per hour unless otherwise noted.
