What is a Classified Employee?

A "Classified Employee" is an employee of a local district who is not required to have certification for his/her position.

Where can I find information about positions I can apply for with JCPS?

New vacancies are posted in the Job List every Wednesday. All applications must be received in Personnel Services by the deadline date posted. Postmarks are not considered. Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer Offering Equal Educational Opportunities

How do I apply for a Classified position with JCPS?

In order to complete the JCPS On-line Employment Application you will need the following information:

  • Your Social Security Number
  • 4 Employer / Professional References (complete addresses)
  • Work History (complete addresses and dates)
  • Emergency Contact Information (address and phone numbers)

Terminals are available in the Application Center at the VanHoose Education Center (3332 Newburg Road), Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. You can use any computer with an Internet connection (libraries, government employment centers, etc). For additional information, please contact the Application Center at 502/485-3370.

What is needed to apply for a Classified position?

Depending on the position that you applied for, the following may be required for you to be considered for the position.

KY Paraeducator Test

A battery of tests given on the computer covers reading, writing, mathematics, and instructional strategies. This assessment is given to applicants applying for Instructional Assistants, Bus Monitors (Early Childhood) or Instructor I. The test is approximately 1 and 1/2 hours and is scheduled through the Application Center. There is a study guide available online or you may contact the Adult Education Department at 502/485-7101 for a free assessment/study/test session. Please note, you are exempt from the taking the KPA if you have a minimum of 48 college hours, or above, from an accredited college or university.

Clerical Skill

This test is given to applicants applying for positions of Clerical, Secretarial, Bookkeeper, and Lunchroom/Office Assistant. The test lasts approximately 1 and 1/2 hours. A battery of tests, given on a computer covers typing, filing, mathematics, customer service, checking, and vocabulary. You can further your typing skills by logging in to www.typingtest.com .

Criminal Background Check

This is required of all applicants seeking employment with the Jefferson County Public Schools.

  • Classified applicants must complete state background check.
  • The cost is $5.00—please bring exact payment. (payment is subject to change without notice)
  • Backgrounds checks are processed Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m..
  • You must sign in at the Application Center prior to being fingerprinted.

What do I need to do to apply for a Bus Driver for JCPS?

  1. Make application at, C.B. Young Jr., Service Center, Room 132, 3001 Crittenden Drive, Louisville, KY 40209, phone - 485-3800 or at the VanHoose Education Center, Room 109, 3332 Newburg Road, Louisville KY 40218, phone - 502/485-3311.
  2. When applying, bring copy of High School Diploma or GED, verification for completing Immigration Form I-9, (such as driver’s license or personal identification and Social Security card or birth certificate or passport), complete names and mailing addresses to process references, and $5.00 for criminal records check.
  3. Minimum qualifications: High School Diploma or GED or willing to be enrolled or currently enrolled and making progress in the GED program. Valid driver’s license with evidence of a good driving record. Must be 21 years of age, and practice effective written and verbal communication skills.
  4. Must successfully complete Jefferson County Public Schools’ School Bus Driver Training. Will be required to obtain Commercial Drivers License. Paid mandatory training for all selected candidates.

How can I become a classified substitute employee?

  1. Complete an on-line application
  2. Call the Application Center, VanHoose Education Center, Room 109, 3332 Newburg Road, Louisville KY 40218, phone - 502/485-3370.
  3. When applying bring verification for completing Immigration Form I-9 (such as driver's license or personal identification and Social Security card (or birth certificate or passport), complete names and addresses of four references, $5.00 for a criminal record check, a copy of your college degree, high school diploma or GED or have a willingness to enroll in the GED program and make satisfactory progress toward receiving the GED.
  4. Some positions may require testing, training, or a physical examination, which must be scheduled by JCPS personnel.
  5. Substitute employees are given first consideration when entry-level employment opportunities occur.

How is my salary determined?

Clerical/Instructional Assistants/Others: Placed on salary schedule IA. The maximum entry step for a newly hired, full-time employee is Step 3 with verified job-related related work experience, education beyond what is required, and active military duty DD-214.

Nutrition Services, Custodial, Transportation, In-School Security, Maintenance: Placed on salary schedule IB. The maximum entry step for a newly hired full-time employee is Step 3 with verified job-related related work experience, education beyond what is required, and active military duty DD-214.
