Housekeeping

Training/Staff Development

Initial Employment

All newly hired custodians receive five days individual and professional instruction. Sessions begin on Monday at 8 a.m. in the Housekeeping Services Training area. Sessions include:

Days one and two consist of a complete new-employee orientation that includes housekeeping standard operating procedures, job responsibilities, and attitudes, JCPS policies, salary information, promotional opportunities, proper supply and equipment use, use of the automated assignment system, employee benefits, and other in-house processing.

Days three through four are scheduled for on-the-job training beginning at 1 p.m. and ending at 9:30 p.m. nightly. Each evening a training film is viewed--followed by a question-and-answer instruction session. Supplies and equipment needed for each procedure are then assembled for complete on-the-job training.

After completing these training classes, personnel are ready to assume their duties as custodians with full knowledge of all cleaning procedures, safe and proper use of products and equipment, and job expectations.

JCPS hosts one paid orientation day for all newly hired employees once monthly. Newly hired custodians are notified of their scheduled date/time/location.

Annual Summer Institute

The Housekeeping Services Office, in conjunction with JCPS Human Resources and the Plant Operator Association, facilitate annual professional-development sessions for all district plant operators, lead custodians, and custodians. Essential job-specific training is provided as well as updates regarding on-the-job safety, security information, and procedural changes. In addition to staff development, annual attendance by all housekeeping staff members is essential to ensure compliance with facility regulatory agencies and to stay abreast of standard operating procedural changes.

Agendas and session information are sent in early spring to all principals and plant operators and are advertised on the JCPS Web site. Over the past three years 90 percent of JCPS housekeeping staff members have attended these sessions annually.

Plant Operator Trainee Program

Training is provided when custodial employees are promoted into the trainee program. This includes instruction and training in: providing leadership to the local-school housekeeping team, staff scheduling, preventative maintenance duties, heating/ventilation/air conditioning systems, security systems, facility maintenance, fire safety codes, inclement weather responsibilities, recycling, indoor air quality, MSDS responsibilities, HAZCOM, housekeeping standard operating procedures, personnel procedures, and many other areas where a plant operator’s expertise may be needed. Following five days of classroom training, participants are provided on-the-job training for a minimum of 60 workdays. The trainee program is designed to prepare personnel for plant operator positions.
