Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes breed in standing water that is found outside on the school property or on adjoining properties in the vicinity. Stagnant ponds, unless they contain fish, along with many other sources are potential breeding grounds. The water needs to be standing for five to seven days.
Locations that can potentially hold water need to be checked for standing water and dumped and eliminated from the possibility of holding water. Work orders should be called in for JCPS Pest Control to treat standing water areas that cannot be eliminated by the school.
Likely locations of standing water that are breeding habitats for mosquitoes:
- Bird baths
- Tires, toys, playground areas
- Cans, buckets, containers without lids
- Flower pots without drain holes
- Gutters containing leaves (Leaves should be removed by custodians.)
- Catch basins, drains, low spots, and ditches with standing water
Only low-risk, non-aerosol pest control chemicals approved by the Board of Health are applied by JCPS Pest Control. Schools are prohibited from applying pesticides in schools. If fogging of the outside area is deemed warranted by JCPS Pest Control, the Board of Health will be contacted for application outside of school hours.
Personal repellants, such as Deet, used by students are by approval and application by the parent or guardian.
