Optional and Magnet Programs Application Information

Application Information for Optional and Magnet Middle & High School Programs

Application Only (Middle & High School)

Procedures for Middle and High School Applicants

  • Read the application carefully.
  • Submit only one (1) application. Submitting a second application automatically cancels the first one and could jeopardize a student's program acceptance.
  • Fill in all the information requested on the application. Leaving blank spaces could slow the acceptance process.
  • You may select up to two choices. If more than two choices are made, the application cannot be processed.
  • Do not use post office box numbers for the student's address. Post office box numbers cannot be processed.
  • Mail the completed application to:
Office of Optional, Magnet, and Advance Programs
    Jefferson County Public Schools
    P.O. Box 34020
    Louisville, KY 40232-4020
  • When your application is received, a confirmation postcard is mailed. If you have not received this card within three (3) weeks of submitting your application, please call 485-3323.
  • Please contact the school about the program in which you have an interest to determine if additional materials are required (e.g., progress reports, test scores, portfolios, essays). Please do not mail any additional information with the Application Form.
  • After you are notified of your acceptance, contact the Department of Transportation (485-3470) for bus schedule information.
  • Several schools use a random-draw list for acceptance of applications. All applications for these schools must be submitted to the Optional, Magnet, and Advance Programs Office no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2012, to be included on the computer random-rank listing. The following schools use such a random-rank ordering:
    • Brown School
    • Farnsley Middle School
    • Meyzeek Middle School
    • Newburg Middle School
  • Traditional Program/Magnet Schools
  • Students Currently enrolled in a district traditional elementary or middle school should not fill out an application for a district traditional middle or high school.
  • Submitting an application does not guarantee placement in a program or school.

All applications for middle and high school Optional and Magnet programs should be received in the Optional, Magnet, and Advance Programs Office (located in the Lam Building behind the VanHoose Education Center) by 5 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2012. Postmarks are not considered. Neither the date nor the order applications are received during the application period will be a factor in the selection of students for Magnet Program/Magnet schools.

Questions about the application process should be directed to the Optional, Magnet, and Advance Programs Office at 485-3323.
