Mission

The Information Technology Department at Jefferson County Public Schools is responsible for all aspects of administrative and instructional technologies. It is an umbrella organization comprised of the three units listed below. These three units work closely together to advance the mission of Jefferson County Public Schools.

Computer Education Support (CES)

The mission of the Computer Education Support (CES) Unit is to ensure that every Jefferson County Public Schools student and staff member is a competent, confident user of technology. The CES Unit provides on-site consultation to all school and office locations, develops paper and web-based support publications, operates a Help Desk, delivers professional development and training, installs local area network hardware and software, and maintains the JCPS website. The CES Unit also implements the District's Computer Applications Skills Continuum, and provides leadership for the assessment of students and staff performance in the use of instructional technology.

The CES Unit employs 18 Certified Teachers, 5 Support Staff, 3 Training Specialists, 3 Distance Learning/Web Staff, and 5 Technical Staff members, all of whom are skilled in computer applications, software installation, and professional development design and delivery.

Management Information Services (MIS)

Management Information Services (MIS) develops, supports, and operates the District's administrative systems, such as student attendance, staff payroll, and budget systems. MIS also maintains JCPS's data warehouse and staff and student email systems.

MIS's 52 employees are involved in mainframe, database, desktop, and web development and support, as well as computer operations and security.

Telecommunications (Telecom)

Telecommunications is responsible for all communications in the District. The 34 people in Telecom have extended expertise in local area and wide area networking, telephony, operating system implementation and support, and workstation maintenance.

Currently there are over 25,000 workstations, 400 servers, over 4,000 printers, over 5,000 pieces of networking equipment, and over 10,500 telephone handsets being supported and maintained by Telecommunications. Starting in 1998 the District started a five year wiring plan to upgrade the communications infrastructure to meet KETS wiring and support standards. That project was completed in 2002 with the exception of one school. The school in question is currently undergoing renovation and will be brought up to KETS standards in late 2004.
