Technology

MIS uses 4 major technologies:

  • Mainframe
  • Data Warehouse
  • Client/Server
  • Web

Mainframe

We use a Bull DPS 9000/52 dual-processor system to support approximately 300 concurrent online users. This system handles over 250,000 transactions per day from traditional terminals as well as PC's and Macintoshes.

Data Warehouse

Our data warehouse system uses a Teradata 5100 system with 1 terabyte of disk storage (that's 1,000,000,000,000 bytes). Every night, data is replicated from the mainframe to the data warehouse for use in reports and decision support via tools like Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, and SPSS.

Client/Server

MIS has used Visual Basic and Access to develop client/server systems for use in the District's schools. Our servers run on Windows NT and Windows 2000.  We recently implemented a student email system designed to support over 60,000 student users. This is one of the world's largest implementations of Microsoft Exchange 2000. Read a Microsoft case study on this project...

Web

MIS is actively working to develop web applications to enhance the utility of the wealth of data collected through our online systems. Using Microsoft's IIS, VBScript, and JavaScript, we have developed applications for our School Services and Demographics departments.
