Mike Broderick, the JCPS Webmaster was the first man at the helm. The stern person or the helmsman, sits up higher and uses a longer paddle. You can steer the canoe by using a rudder stroke or a sweep stoke. the most efficient method is to enlist the help of the other paddles. For example if the bow does a draw to the left, and the person in the front behind the bowmen on the right does a sweep stroke, and the helmsman does a draw on the right, the canoe will turn to the left. This does take some practice.
