The Office of Academic Competition also coordinates future problem solving team competitions, works with the 15th district PTA on the county spelling bee, and acts as a liaison with the Kentucky Association of Academic Competition, which organizes the statewide Governor's Cup competition each year.

Athletics & Activities

Jefferson County Public High Schools currently offer 14 boys’ and 14 girls’ sports for students at the high school level. Students can participate in a variety of activities in 3 seasons. In fall, students begin practice on July 15 in cheerleading, football, soccer, volleyball, golf, field hockey, cross country, dance, band, and drill corps. October 15 begins our winter sports that include basketball, wrestling, and swimming. In February, spring sports kick off with softball, baseball, tennis, and track. For students who may have different talents and interests, many schools also offer activities and academic teams including drama, chess, speech and debate, quick recall, newspaper, and yearbook.

In 2004-2005, nearly 8,000 students participated in our 28 different high school sports. Another 59,000 were involved in some activity in our high schools. In the middle schools, 2,200 students participated on athletic teams and nearly 27,000 participated in school activities. Getting involved in extracurricular activities is an important part of middle and high school life. Contact your local school athletic director or activities coordinator to find out what sports and activities are offered at your school. Then, get involved!
