Lady Leathernecks won ninth consecutive victoryThe Marine Corps JROTC Lady Leathernecks Drill Team at Fern Creek Traditional High earned a ninth national title at the High School Drill Team Championship held in May in Daytona Beach, Florida. No other drill team in the country has ever won as many championships, says the team's coach, Master Gunnery Sergeant Douglas Dunlapp. At the 2008 competition, the Lady Leathernecks competed against teams from more than 130 schools throughout the United States. The Fern Creek team earned first-place finishes in three of the five drill categories, and the team's commander, Megan Dickerson, received the Best Overall Commander Award. In addition, Megan and Fern Creek student Samuel Ratliff received first-place trophies for solo rifle exhibitions, and the Fern Creek male Leatherneck Drill Team won honors as the nation's Best Regulation Drill Team.
